The Hague Apostille Convention, formally known as the Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents of 5 October 1961, is an international treaty that standardises and simplifies the use of public documents abroad. Developed by the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH), the convention provides a reliable, consistent method of confirming the authenticity of public documents, such as birth and marriage certificates, academic records, court documents and notarised documents.
When a country joins the Hague Convention, it agrees to accept apostilled documents from all other Hague Apostille convention member countries without any further authentication. South Africa has been a member of the Hague Convention (aka: Apostille Convention) since August 3, 1994. This means that an apostille issued in South Africa by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) or the High Courts is directly accepted by the governments, courts, universities, employers and institutions of all 120+ member countries listed below.
Hague Apostille by Global Apostille provides a fast and reliable apostille service, ensuring that your documents are valid internationally without the need for further legalisation. Our standard turnaround time is 2–3 business days, but we also offer a rush processing service for urgent requests. Even if you are currently living outside South Africa, we can handle your Apostille application – simply courier your documents to our office and we will manage the entire process.
The following countries are members of the Hague Apostille Convention and recognise apostilles issued in South Africa. The countries are organised in alphabetical order for easy reference.
