Applying to business school in Spain is an exciting journey, and for South Africans, securing a student visa is often the first big step in turning that dream into reality. Navigating the visa process can feel overwhelming, but having a clear understanding of the core documents required can make it much smoother.
This guide unpacks the essential paperwork you’ll need for your Spain student visa application in Cape Town, outlining the basic requirements for each item. Whether you’re just starting your application or double-checking your documents, this breakdown will help you stay organized and confident as you prepare to embark on your academic adventure abroad.
National Visa Application Form
First things first: every applicant must complete and sign the National Visa Application Form. If you’re under 18, one of your legal guardians will need to sign it on your behalf. It’s the official start of your application and sets the stage for everything else.
Two Biometric Passport Photographs
Next up, the photos. You’ll need two biometric passport photos measuring 3.5cm x 4.5cm. The background should be white or light, and the photos must be taken within the last six months. No dark glasses or digital retouching allowed here—think fresh and natural! Bring them loose; don’t staple them to your form.
Valid Passport and Photocopy
Your passport must be valid for at least one year from the application date and have at least two blank pages. Passports older than 10 years won’t be accepted. Don’t forget to include a photocopy of the data page to complete this requirement.
Proof of Enrollment
You must submit an official letter of enrollment issued by the educational institution in Spain, a receipt confirming payment of tuition fees, and a copy of the academic program or study plan.
Proof of Financial Means
Spain wants to be sure you can financially support yourself during your stay. You’ll need to provide original documents (plus copies) proving you or your legal guardian have at least €600 per month available, which covers living expenses as per the 2026 IPREM standards. These must be stamped by your bank—screenshots won’t cut it.
Health Insurance Certificate
Health coverage is a must. Your health insurance certificate must be in Spanish and explicitly state ‘cobertura completa sin copagos ni carencias’, meaning full coverage with no co-payments or waiting periods. It should cover from one month before your course start date to 15 days after it ends. Keep in mind, travel insurance won’t be accepted here.
Medical Certificate
You’ll also need a medical certificate signed by a Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) registered practitioner. It must state that you do not suffer from diseases that pose serious public health risks, in accordance with the 2005 International Health Regulations. This certificate is valid for 90 days from the date issued.
Police Clearance Certificate
If you’re over 18 and staying longer than 180 days, a police clearance certificate from the South African Police Service (SAPS) is required. Beware: background checks issued by Postnet or other services won’t be accepted. It must be issued within 90 days before your application submission.
Proof of Accommodation in Spain
Spain needs to know where you’ll be staying. Provide one of the following: a rental contract in your name, a confirmed housing letter from your school, or a notarised invitation letter from a private host in Spain. If you choose the host option, include a copy of their Spanish ID. This proof should cover at least the first four weeks of your stay.
Visa Application Fee Payment
Last but not least, don’t forget to pay the visa application fee. Make sure to keep the receipt as proof of payment—it’s a key part of your application package.
